The Gili islands

In today´s blog I will give some insight in the Gili islands. They don´t officially belong to Bali but to Lombok, but if you go to Bali you can´t skip the Gili´s! I am probably most excited to here! These 3 small islands  are supposed to be honeymoon material!

There are three Gili islands, Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. Gili Trawangan, the Gili-islandsbiggest of the three is the most popular. Backpackers have developed Gili Trawangan into a hippy party paradise destination. If you don´t want to party you can take a boat to one of the other islands and spend your days in a cottage on the beach.

The beaches of the Gili´s are powdery white, the water a beautiful clear blue and they are positioned perfectly for sunsets over Bali´s Gunung Agung (volcano) and sunrise over Lombok´s Mountain Rinjani.

The islands are so small it´s possible to walk around Gili Trawangan in two hours by foot. The most popular stretches of beaches are ‘Goodheart’ (the main stretch) and ‘North Beach’ where the best snorkeling is found!

Gili-Trawangan-beachUnique to the Gili’s all forms of motorized transport are still not allowed, meaning the only way to get around is on foot, by bicycle or in pony carts known as Cidomos. Also there is no form of police on the islands, problems are usually settled by the local island councils.

All little shacks and dive centers on the beach rent out snorkeling equipment for around IDR 30,000 for a whole day (€2,30) With over 25 dive sites surrounding al 3 islands there are opportunities to dive any of the Gilis regardless of where you stay.

On Gili Meno a turtle sanctuary is build. A splendid initiative whereby green sea turtle and loggerhead turtle eggs are collected, hatched, and the younglings safely released into the ocean. In 2008 and 2009, a total of 2,000 turtles were released. You can go along, see the work and lend your support. For 100.000 Rupiahs (€7,90) you can pick and release a young turtle into the ocean. I’m definitely doing this!!

A good way to round off a beach day is to catch the sunset with jugs of Sangria and fresh nusa-dua-beach-by-sektorduaTapas and a BBQ.

Pffff… This all sounds amazing. To make you even more jealous I’ve included some Gili beach pictures! 🙂

Only three more weeks to go!
